A father and son mtb skills session

Steve and Sam came to me for their session and as Sam was an occasional rider but the dad Steve, was into time trials as well as off road riding. I put them both through the skills check and found that Sam had a very natural body position in corners but only when his feet and looking were corrected. I had to stop dad Steve from sitting down in turns too.
Once corrected, we applied both the mental and physical aspects of the skill set to the drop technique and to both their surprises, they were airborne easily!
I moved us onto the trail and I worked on pumping undulations on the trail and also I worked very hard on their cornering and linking sections together. I added looking once their feet were corrected and that enabled dad Steve to mimic Sam's body positioning in corners. I did some off camber turn exercises and they could really feel the extra grip and control before moving back to the trail and riding the rock garden and linking it to two more corners.
I showed why the skill set applied to riding steep up slopes and pumping them to stick to the trail and gain further speed and they even linked this into a corner with a step on the exit.
After a break, they had a good few runs down 9 sections of the trail before mental tiredness began to show and the session ended.
awesome session guys and it was a pleasure to coach you both.

  1. Hi Tony,

Thanks for a great day! I certainly learned a few things that I can apply to plenty of other activities in my day to day (my confidence and control on the bike is better too!)

I really enjoyed your outlook and style of coaching too. Will keep you updated on the progress!

    Thanks again,
    Sam

  2. Ditto Tony, a valuable, and well targeted coaching session. As well as an improvement in MTB handling, I know that I will be cornering faster during Time Trials this year!
Thanks again. I'm sure we will be in touch again in the future.
